Though I can't put my finger on why, I find this book to be a bit of a slow read at times and I don't think his insights are particularly unique. Without periodic renewal the best ideas become stale platitudes distilled into curves in textbook graphs, then slowly rinsed away by the latest or (most politically comfortable) fad. Magnificently written and read, this book solves some of the mysteries of everyday life with wit and style.

This book is similar to The Naked Economist in that it explains how economic principles work in our everyday lives, thus making a seemingly esoteric subject accessible to more people. Granted the author pretends to only be 'shedding a little light' on the true nature of the world; he lost me at -let's look at how else greed could be of benefit to everybody. Tim Harford's language is very clear and precise, often humorous, and agreeable. We need readable economists to periodically dust off timeless truths of human behavior with original perspectives that cut through the fog of political rhetoric and identify by relevant metaphor and example what actually works for us, and why it does.
