There never had been a problem, nor was there one currently, between Paul’s message and the teaching of the Jerusalem church. ntwrightpage.com/Wright_Paul_Arabia_Elijah.pdf, Paul did meet Jesus on the road to Damascus. They are reading the chapter and paragraph completely wrong. *, And along with that, perhaps the following passage from 1 Cor. 11:23 et seq. He begins in verses 11 and 12 by saying that the Gospel he preached was not devised by human wisdom, nor had he received it from the other apostles; rather, he was taught it directly by Jesus Christ Himself.
Begin today find your private place and listen carefully to what the Lord has to say. His destination was Arabia, where he was to spend three years being taught directly by Jesus Christ (Galatians 1:11 - 12, 15 - 18). In Galatians 1:11–2:10, he expands on these two points. What made Paul’s faith so great? Perhaps the Lord has a great ministry for you, but first He is waiting for you to purposefully set aside time to be with Him. He continues by reminding them that he had been trained in and was fanatically devoted to the erroneous traditions of Judaism. If it were true, it would be pretty strong evidence that he was commissioned by Christ. Thus, like the other apostles, Paul studied with Christ for three years before beginning his ministry (compare Acts 1:21). He flees the City and goes to Jerusalem to meet with Peter……Acts 9:20-25)…and (Gal 1:18). He fell off from his mount (an equine although we are not sure which kind probably a donkey) and hit the ground blinded by an intense light. Paul said that when Christ called him, he did not go to Jerusalem to receive instruction from the apostles. “I did not consult any man, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus” (vv. :Hmmm: Well St. Paul himself, described the event in detail. In thinking about this some more, I would think that if Jesus literally taught Paul in the desert for three years that he might have made some mention of it in his letters (particularly those letters of his where he is defending his authority). Then the events of Acts 13…where he is ordained and sent on his first missionary mission for the Gentiles… The leaders of the Church at Antioch were praying and received instruction from the Holy Spirit to Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them (Acts 13:3). Then another visit to Jerusalem later, (Gal 2:2)…to present the Gospel that I preach to the Gentiles so that I might not be running, or have run in vain (Gal 2:2). – Then his journey to Jerusalem. Wright: Many questions have been raised concerning Paul's journey into Arabia. Most likely it was during those three years that the Lord began to reveal to Paul many deep spiritual truths. What practical application can we make from this to our lives today? I have always felt when reading Paul almost like a voyeur, eves dropping on a conversation where there is a subtext that those in the conversation fully understand. But there something else that happened very early in Paul’s salvation experience that helped to prepare him for a life of service. I am only now beginning to realise that through the Jewish daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and generational liturgical practice that nearly all Jewish people had a familiarity with the old testament scriptures that today one could only come close to with a lifetime of study, and that a single verse in the New Testament such as Gal 1:17 is just a single knot in a vast tapestry that the Jewish audience of the day could grasp.
Fourteen years after his conversion, he had occasion to go to Jerusalem and there he met privately with the leaders, including the apostles Peter and John (2:1–10). Am I just skipping over the scripture? From reading various sources, this is what I personally deduced: Acts 9……Paul’s coversion is sometime after the death of Stephen (Acts 9).
A noted biblical scholar wrote an entire paper on exactly the verse that is the source of the question! The one who told him “I am Jesus”? He was not one of the Apostles. He emerged, ready to communicate divine truth. Paul begins Galatians by saying that he was sent by Christ and the Father, and that the other church leaders agreed with him.
Many consider Paul to be the greatest Christian who ever lived. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:8, “Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me.”, Here is a fascinating examination of Galatians 1:17 by the Biblical historian N.T. The Lord speaks to believers so that they will comprehend the truth, conform to the truth, and communicate the truth. 18 Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. These same steps form a roadmap to discipleship. I think it is the Scripture passage hu324b gave - Galatians 1:11-18 - and especially verse 12*:For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it; but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. What would it require for such accord in our generation? The first question relates to the meaning of the word. It doesn’t say that he fell off a mount only that he fell down and a light shone around him.
Jesus’ ministry started some time after John’s (see e.g., John 1). Luke has Paul imitating Phineas and Elijah from the Old Testament. I suppose such a thing could have happened in those three years.
– His time in Damascus preaching in the synagogue Paul taught by Jesus in the desert for three years? The point Paul is making to the Galatians is that there has never been any question about the content of the Gospel. After Paul’s conversion, he disappeared into the desert for three years, during which time the Holy Spirit instructed him in the ways of God. It has often been remarked that Paul clearly implied that he spent three years being taught by Jesus Himself (1:12), either directly or (perhaps more likely) through the study of the Word. Who do you think Paul was having that conversation with on his way to Damascus? First published in Tabletalk Magazine, an outreach of Ligonier. Paul never met Jesus. The Next 500 Years: 2017 National Conference, Show Me Your Glory: Understanding the Majestic Splendor of God, La Biblia de Estudio de La Reforma, Spanish Edition, Naming Ligonier the Beneficiary of a Bank or Investment Account, Gifts That Provide Income and Tax Benefits. That leaves Nisan 14: April 7, A.D. 30; and April 3, A.D. 33; Note that the former date supports the idea of a one-year ministry, and the latter, the three-year ministry. The mission, passion and purpose of Ligonier Ministries is to proclaim the holiness of God Pray for the unity of Christ’s church and the resulting peace that would ensue. After this visit…he goes home to Tarsus…for another 3 years or so…Barnabas then arrived and asked him to come to Antioch and help him evangelize there (Acts 11:25-26)…he stays there for about a year…then goes again to Jerusalem to deliver a collection for the poor and returns to Antioch…. While there on this first visit he stayed for 15 days and also met James. The men with him heard the voice but could see no one. Correct! They were not wasted years, but years of preparation so that when he was given the opportunity to speak he would have something significant to say. *For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks … *. Paul met Jesus but it was after the Crucifixion and it was after the Resurrection and it was after the Ascension.
Some suggest that he spent three years there; however, scripture seems to indicate that the three years included: – His conversion The resurrected Jesus appeared to him. Then he goes to Damascus (Gal 1:17) for a period of three years….where he starts debating in the synagogues. Between 1 to 3 yrs after conversion, he goes to the Desert of Arabia…(Gal 1:17)….for prayer and reflection. I believe Paul was instructed by the Holy Spirit and was given a special grace to evangelize to the Gentiles. I believe that it was his ability, his availability, and his dependability.
